Initiatives by regional banks and NTT DATA to support regional revitalization

Context

While the [Society 5.0] concept is an ideal future vision for Japanese society, local communities face not only common social issues but also unique issues for each region. Collaboration between multiple companies and organizations is essential to solving these issues.
A new framework was required for regional financial institutions to make the most of their social credibility, which is their characteristic, and to solve regional issues (population, workforces, economy, services, etc.) together with regional businesses and local governments. In addition, in order to clarify the issues, create a common understanding, and find clues to solve them together, it was necessary to find companies and organizations in each region that agreed with the project and start by considering how to form mutual contact points.
FOURDIGIT has a track record of being involved in research and service design in various regions of Japan for disaster prevention and regional bank projects. In addition, in our own initiatives such as project "MOM FoR STAR" and "iDID", the company has faced regional issues as a related party through involvement with people living in Okinawa Prefecture, people who are living in other various regions of Japan and through people who are involved in creative work, We therefore decided to support the initiatives with both the design and knowledge.

Our Approach

What kind of companies and organizations are likely to support and participate in the project, and how should they feel about the initiative?. We began by deriving and producing the materials necessary to achieve this. We increased our contact points by holding events and speaking engagements in the area, and built relationships in each region by sharing the issues each region and company faces. Through trial and error, we laid the groundwork for each region, and established the framework and theme.

Clarification of service positioning

The project began by analyzing how the relevant departments of NTT DATA's financial division, which will play a key role, are viewed by the local companies and local banks, which they collaborate.
Based on the fact that while there is trust in mission-critical operations, there are also high expectations for new proposals. In order to be close to the people and companies living in the region and in addition to a worldview that can foster a sense of anticipation for the future, the project derived an image of a service that can cover everything from upstream to downstream, incorporating not only soft aspects such as strategy, business creation, and human resource development, but also infrastructure and solutions to support local communities.

Material & Communication Design

We identify issues that are apparent in the region, as well as potential issues, and formulate hypotheses on how common social and regional issues can be resolved in order to reach a common understanding. We then compile these into white papers and service catalogs.
As the target audience is wide, we assumed that the readers and viewers of the content will be people who are not familiar with IT or design, and we made efforts to help them understand the content through means other than the text, such as using many diagrams and illustrations. We also tried to unify the tone, manner, and tone of voice so that the readers and viewers would feel a bright future for the region.

Events and information exchange

By holding face-to-face discussions with the local banks with which they have direct contact, they deepen mutual understanding. And by participating in various events held in the area and repeatedly making presentations and exchanging information, they gradually understand and have others understand the area and the people, which increases the resolution, empathizes, and shares ideas and issues.
They exchange information and build a foundation with people from a variety of backgrounds, including organizations and companies that support foreign students living in the area and help them find employment in the area, companies that promote startups and workcations, infrastructure companies that support the local community, media, and local governments. They are sometimes invited to help cut grass in the sunflower fields and participate in village festivals, deepening their friendships with people living in the area.

Current situation and future

Although the project has just begun, we have already learned about the issues and actual situations of the region that far exceed our hypotheses. There are a wide range of activities that are essential for promotion, such as translating the findings into actions for individual regions and collaborators including considering solutions. It is also necessary to involve more people in these activities.
